A situation comedy, usually referred to as a sitcom, is a genre of comedy programs which originated in radio. Today, sitcoms are found almost exclusively on television as one of its dominant narrative forms. Sitcoms usually consist of recurring characters in a common environment such as a home or workplace and can include laugh tracks or studio audiences.

Characteristics

As opposed to stand up comedy a situation comedy has a storyline and ongoing characters in, essentially, a comedic drama.

The situation is usually that of a family, workplace, or a group of friends. The term situation comedy or sitcom was adopted to distinguish them from other comedy formats such as sketch comedy, or stand-up comedy. Often these other formats were presented within a variety format mixed with musical performances, as in vaudeville. The emerging mass medium of radio allowed audiences to return to programs over and over, which allowed programs to return to the same characters and situations each episode and expect audiences to be familiar with them. While the humor in sitcoms varies, it is usually character-driven, which may result in running gags during the series.

Often in a situation comedy television series the status quo is maintained from episode to episode; while within an episode there may be a distruption to the usual situation and the character interactions, this will usually be settled by the episode's end and the situation returned to how it was prior to the disruption. There are exceptions to this. Some shows feature story arcs across many episodes where the characters and situations change and evolve.

What do YOU think about the portrayal of WOMEN on sitcoms?
Q. The women are always portayed as intelligent and the men are either idiotic, or immature. ALSO, whenever there is a conflict on the show, the women is alway RIGHT and the man is always WRONG. I just can't believe sitcoms are still using this same tired formula. And its so far from reality. Why can't there be a sitcom where the man is the smart one and the women is an immature moron? Are women that sensitive that we always have to "pretend" they are smarter and more advanced than men?

A. While such portrayals are morally wrong, you must understand that the people writing it want it to be a money-spinner, not a morally correct drama. Sitcoms where women are always right and in command are real crowd-pleasers. People find it more entertaining than when the man is right. These sitcoms have the very sad effect - if not the intention - of convincing people that women can never be wrong and if she is wrong, a man is the cause. How can women ever be the cause of any problem? Are they not the pure, virtuous angels fending off us male ogres? It is not that women are too sensitive to see the truth. They are too close-minded to accept that they are as smart - and dumb - as us. No gender is smarter or dumber than the other. We're… [cont.]

What are the most popular American TV sitcoms (comedies) that are broadcast in Europe?
Q. Why?
Asked by Eddie Cacciatore, Private Eye - Tue Mar 17 22:17:11 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Here in the Netherlands we get many American sitcoms imported and the new ones are usually shown at primetime, so it shows that they are fairly popular but also these tend to be drama series rather than sitcoms like Criminal Minds, NCIS, Law & Order, Numb3rs, Ghost Whisperer etc However I don't tend to watch them then so I can't really tell you, and especially not for the whole of Europe as it really vaires as to the popularity a lot from country to country. One of the channels which does show a lot of American sitcoms is called "Veronica" here in the Netherlands and every weekday evening at dinnertime it shows old episodes of sitcoms which are easy watch My wife and kids, According to Jim, Will & Grace, Friends, Joey Then on a Monday… [cont.]
