A cardinal is a senior ecclesiastical official, usually a bishop, of the Catholic Church. They are collectively known as the College of Cardinals, which as a body elects a new pope. The duties of the cardinals include attending the meetings of the College and making themselves available individually or collectively to the pope if he requests their counsel. Most cardinals have additional duties, such as leading a diocese or archdiocese or running a department of the Roman Curia.

A cardinal's other main function is electing the pope whenever, by death or resignation, the seat becomes vacant. In 1059, the right of electing the pope was reserved to the principal clergy of Rome and the bishops of the seven suburbicarian sees. During the sede vacante, the period between a pope's death and the election of his successor, the day-to-day governance of the Church as a whole is in the hands of the College of Cardinals. The right to enter the conclave of cardinals who elect the pope is now limited to those who are not over 80 years old on the day of the pope's death or resignation.

The term "cardinal" at one time applied to any priest permanently assigned or incardinated to a church, or specifically to the senior priest of an important church, based on the Latin cardo (hinge), meaning "principal" or "chief". The term was applied in this sense as early as the ninth century to the priests of the tituli (parishes) of the diocese of Rome. In the twelfth century the practice of appointing ecclesiastics from outside Rome as cardinals began, with each of them being assigned a church in Rome as his titular church, or being linked with one of the suburbicarian dioceses, while still being incardinated in a diocese other than that of Rome.

What's with Catholicism?
Q. So last time I went to church, I remember the priest saying, "God bless you all, especially our cardinal and the pope." I kinda threw up in my mouth a little, that God blesses the pope, who sits on a mountain of gold stolen from Latin America and Africa, in his robes of riches, etc., and who gets to tell millions of people what to do isn't blessed enough? Sounds like God likes him a little better than some homeless kids who could eat some food and not starve to death if the pope would give up some of his super-expenisve and really comfortable red-silk robes or his gold throne. I wonder how mane people we could feed with all the money that gets wasted on telling people to have unprotected sex and that evolution is :sort of true" now...… [cont.]

A. May God bless you and may you get rid of the anger in your heart. And we don't worship the Pope. We are all in need of being Prayed for, asking for our Prayers and praying for the Pope is another example of humility. You would not pray for the same person you worship, that is just silly. And the Catholic Church is the largest donor to people in need in the world. Peace be with you.

Some common misconceptions about Catholicism?
Q. Catholics worship statues: We do not worship the material of the statues, we worship the form they represent. In other words, if we pray in front of a statue of Jesus on a cross, we do not worship the wood and marble, we worship the eternal God represented in the statue. Oh, and no, we do not worship Mary or the Saints either. We love and venerate them, and that does not make us love or venerate God any less. Forgiveness of sin is for God alone God sent his apostles out to heal the sick, proclaim the gospel, and forgive sins. To Peter, Jesus said, "I give you the keys to the kingdoom...who's sins you forgive will be forgiven" We need no mediary between us and God We recognize one priest, jesus christ, who acts in a very special way… [cont.]

A. I was raised a Catholic and agree their are misconceptions about that religion. I am no longer a Catholic, but I do see some that believe those misconceptions.

The pope and the Rabbi?
Q. Several centuries ago, the Pope decreed that all the Jews had to convert to Catholicism or leave Italy . There was a huge outcry from the Jewish community, so the pope offered a deal. He would have a religious debate with the leader of the Jewish community. If the Jews won, they could stay in Italy . If the Pope won, they would have to convert or leave. The Jewish people met and picked an aged and wise Rabbi to represent them in the debate. However, as the Rabbi spoke no Italian, and the Pope spoke no Yiddish, they agreed that it would be a "silent" debate. On the chosen day the Pope and Rabbi sat opposite each other. The Pope raised his hand and showed three fingers. The Rabbi looked back and raised one finger. Next,… [cont.]
