Redneck is a disparaging term that refers to a person who is stereotypically Caucasian and of lower social-economic status in the United States, particularly referring to those living in rural areas. Originally limited to the Southern United States, and then to Appalachia, the term has become widely used throughout North America. Use of the term for members of the National Mine Workers' UnionThe term redneck was also used in The West Virginia Coal Miners March (1921) or the Battle of Blair Mountain when coal miners wore red bandannas around their necks to identify themselves as seeking the opportunity to unionize. Use of the term for Irish CatholicsThe term is recorded in the American Midwestern and Western States as referring to Irish Catholics. It's actually pretty interesting that you mentioned this, because a girl from Texas moved here recently and our history teacher brought up the subject because we were discussing the Alamo. A lot of people in my class didn't believe in the stereotype, as he took a vote. Only about a fifth of the class raised their hand, and the polls are usually pretty truthful. I have to say, whoever commented on this, just brush it away and ignore them. You know you aren't, and pretty soon, they'll catch on that you aren't. I must say though, that the media and our current president probably contributed to the stereotype considerably.
