The Catholic Church, also known as the Roman Catholic Church, is the world's largest Christian church, with more than a billion members. The Church's leader is the Pope who holds supreme authority in concert with the College of Bishops of which he is the head. A communion of the Western (Latin Rite) church and 22 autonomous Eastern Catholic churches (called particular churches) comprise a total of 2,795 dioceses in 2008. The Church defines its mission as spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ, administering the sacraments and exercising charity. It operates social programs and institutions throughout the world including schools, universities, hospitals, missions, shelters and charities.

The Catholic Church teaches that it is the original Church founded by Jesus upon the Apostles, among whom Simon Peter was chief. The Church teaches that its bishops, through apostolic succession, are consecrated successors of these apostles, and that the Bishop of Rome (the Pope) as the successor of Peter possesses a universal primacy of jurisdiction and pastoral care. Church doctrines have been defined through 21 ecumenical councils, following the example set by the first Apostles in the Council of Jerusalem. On the basis of reports in the Gospels of promises made by Jesus to his apostles, the Church maintains that it is guided by the Holy Spirit and so protected from falling into doctrinal error. Catholic beliefs are based on the deposit of Faith (containing both the Holy Bible and Sacred Tradition) handed down from the time of the Apostles, which are interpreted by the Church's teaching authority. Those beliefs are formally detailed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Formal Catholic worship is called the liturgy. The Eucharist is the central component of Catholic worship.

With a history spanning almost two thousand years, the Church is the western world's oldest and largest institution, having played a prominent role in the politics and history of Western civilization since the 4th century. It maintains that it is the "One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church" founded by Jesus Christ, although it also believes that the Holy Spirit can make use of other Christian communities to bring people to salvation and that it is called to work for unity among Christians.

What steps did the catholic church did to reform the church?
Q. What steps did the catholic church did to reform the church? during the 1530's and 40's

A. Catholics commit the horrible sin of idolatry when they bow before a statue of Mary. Exodus 20:4-5a commands, Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them... Catholics commit the sin of idolatry every time they bow and pray to Mary. Why would a Christian want to continue in such wickedness?

How did the Catholic Church in the Dark Ages Europe slow the development of medical advancements?
Q. Im doing a essay on the dark ages in europe on medical advancements conflicting with the church. Does anyone have any specific information or links on how the medieval catholic church slowed new medical discoveries and research??

A. You have quite a bit to unlearn. First, the "Dark Ages" is a derogatory term for the European Middle Ages used by Protestants to trivialize and demonize the Catholic Church of the time. The term referred to a supposed lack of learning in the period. Actually, the Middle Ages were not really so "dark." Legitimate historians do not use the term. The Catholic Church has sponsored and supported responsible medical advancements throughout history. I suggest you read the book "How the Catholic Church Built Western Civilization" by Thomas E. Woods, Jr. With love in Christ.

Will the Catholic Church always consider itself more important than the people within the church?
Q. If the Catholic Church was confronted by a terrible monster, would the Catholic Church throw its own people to the monster to save itself? Why do people voluntarily belong to such a corrupt organization as this? Is it voluntary at all? Have these people been so brainwashed that they no longer have free will?

A. The more you ask questions, the more you reveal. The last question says it all. "Have these people been so brainwashed that they no longer have free will?" Well, it IS true that St. Augustine, the protege of St. Ambrose, clearly established the Catholic doctrine that no matter what you do in this world with your free will, it is by the grace of God alone that anyone gets into Heaven. There are plenty of misled people on Y!Answers who believe that Catholics rely on works to get them into Heaven and they have no idea that the Reformers got most of their ideals from Augustine. And Augustine knew that free will is not how you get into Heaven. Obedience is. For Catholics, obedience isn't a choice. It's the Way. You don't wonder, "Hmmm, am I… [cont.]
