A. Light humour is the only kind of humour that is acceptable to everyone in society. Strained humour will usually offend someone - even if not readily apparent.

Women and men..How important is a sense of humor when choosing a mate?
Q. I ask because I see so many people in this forum who seem to lack a sense of humor. They take everything literally and it seems to be an equal amount of men and women who lack a funny bone. So, on a scale of 1-10, how important is a sense of humor to you when you choose a mate? Why is it important or not important to you?
Asked by Lost Soul - Mon Dec 1 14:15:33 2008 - - 20 Answers - 0 Comments
A. 10. If a girl I dig can't laugh at me or herself the relationship won't last more than a week. Humour is not only my best medicine but it's my only medicine. I can be with the hottest girl alive but if she takes me or herself too seriously, it'll last about a week (maybe two weeks tops).

How can you regain sense of humor and ability to be outwardly warm/expressive after a trauma?
Q. I suffer from post traumatic stress and social anxiety. What can I do to regain my sense of humor and feel comfortable expressing myself outwardly? It feels like I haven't laughed properly for years and I have difficulty making friends because I'm so shy, withdrawn and emotionally 'shut down'. I feel I can't connect with people. :(
Asked by JaJa Moonbeam - Fri Jul 11 13:56:10 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Time. The only cure is time. But remember that any day you can open your eyes is a good day. Take baby steps. Go to a park or a beach when no one is around. Enjoy the sensations of nature. If you can manage it, go get a massage. Ask the massuese not to talk and just relax and feel the massage as something meant to feel good. Always remember that the possibility of getting back to normal is there, so just have patience and persistance. Take care.

How humor heals speech help on the intro and conclusion?
Q. Can y'all help me come up with an introduction and conclusion on how humor heals for a speech? It needs to be catchy and informative.
Asked by Alexis M - Sun Feb 15 13:31:35 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. LOL, I'm working on that too. Maybe use the phrase laughter is the best medecine. Link it to your topic. Then do your thesis (the main point) like "I'm here today to explain to you why humor is such a great technique for getting better." Then go over your three points, maybe the science behind it, how the idea got started, and ...well I can't think of anything else right now. In the conclusion rephrase the thesis, the main points, and give us something to think about, like maybe another quote or somehow remind them of the quote you started with. Hope this helps! - Marlee

How do you describe your sense of humor?
Q. I always find it funny how someone will fall over laughing at a joke, while the other person just stands there staring into space. Do you suppose people get their sense of humor from their parents? Culture?

A. And the other person (staring into space) will fall over laughing at a completely different joke that would leave you staring off into space! I think a sense of humor comes from family and close people. If one is with a family that laughs a lot, they will love to laugh, too.

A. I'm not a scientist, so for questions like this I like the WNYC Radio Lab podcast because they do a good job of synthesizing difficult scientific questions in an entertaining and educational way. They've looked at laughter (which is related to but still separate from humor). In the process, they talk to scientists and refer to their work, so it's a good way to find actual scientists who are working on questions you're interested in: Laughter: Is it just a human thing? They mention a book about Laughter: Laughter: A Scientific Investigation Hope this is helpful.

What do you believe is the most offensive of shocking type of humor?
Q. Some things that we see on television and in everyday conversation seems really offensive. We always seem to laugh, but what are we really laughing at? I know there are many different types of humor and things that people find funny, but what do you think is the most hurful or offensive?

A. I feel that sitcoms show children being disrespectful to their parents is harmful and promotes such behavior. It only makes it harder for parents to instruct and discipline our children. There have been studies done that when one is exposed over and over again to a person they become sort of numb to it, accepting it as OK and then imitating that behavior. Having said that I strongly feel any jokes tinged (meaning slightly influenced by)with racism, or disrespect of marriage mates and children of parents, eventually will just be OK. I mean don't we already see this in society today?

Q. What's the distinct difference between humor and satire?

A. A satire is usually something which is based on what a person has done, or failed to do - impersonations in otherwords. Good satirists also create impersonations, much like sasha bowen cohen with Borat and Ali G. Humour is the reaction that people give towards satire. I believe it was infact, the greeks that said that all forms of comedy have satire in them.

What factors shape a persons sense of humor?
Q. Does heredity play a role and to what extent if any, can your sense of humor be changed by conscious effort?
Asked by crosseyedlemon - Sun Sep 30 10:05:09 2007 - - 9 Answers - 0 Comments
A. Absolutely, my family and I have a certain sense of humor characterized by wit and word play. I expect it was from my family's above average intelligence. Certain families are just more literate than others and there are certainly more snobby families than mine who have their own sense of humor. Rememeber "Trading Places" with Eddie Murphy? Hopefully, not that bad.. but the rich and "sophisticated" have their own brand. I wouldn't know. But I suspect educated families laugh at jokes others would not. I know, I taught and many jokes went over the kids' heads cuz they didn't know WTH was going on? A joke about the TV show "Trading Rubble" instead of "Trading Spaces" did not work until I had to teach them what the word "rubble" meant... yeah,… [cont.]

A. Go to the public library. The Reference Desk should have a copy of the Writer's Market, which lists publishers (and other venues) where writers can submit their work. The Writer's Market is a directory that is cross referenced by genre. It gives detailed info regarding submission, representation, queries, response time, rates, contact info and the like. Rather than rely on people here who have no clue, go directly to the best source of info.

What is the relationship between humor sorrow and truth and fiction?
Q. Ok so mark twain has written " the secret source of humor is not joy but sorrow" so what i just wanted to ask is what exactly do you think he means and what is the relationship between humor sorrow and what is the relationship between truth and fiction
Asked by Ace - Sat Feb 21 23:35:43 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments
A. When you are a writer, if you want to make your stories funny, you must have suffered through sorrow. This is how Harry Potter has its laugh-out-loud moments. Fiction is a way to convey truth about human nature, and is much more full of truth than history books. History is FACTS, not TRUTH. Therefore, the phrase, "Truth is stranger than fiction," makes no sense taken at face value.
