A joke is a question, short story, or depiction of a situation made with the intent of being humorous. To achieve this end, jokes may employ irony, sarcasm, word play and other devices. Jokes may have a punchline that will end the sentence to make it humorous.

A practical joke or prank differs from a spoken one in that the major component of the humour is physical rather than verbal (for example placing salt in the sugar bowl).

Purpose

Jokes are typically for the entertainment of friends and onlookers. The desired response is generally laughter; when this does not happen the joke is said to have "fallen flat".

However jokes have other purposes and functions, common to comedy/humour/satire in general.

Is it disrespectful to joke or make fun of your friends?
Q. I have a female friend who feels it is disrespectful to joke with your friends. I make fun of her going to clubs and getting numbers, or make jokes about her being a grandma for going to bed at 9. She thinks it's mean and wrong for friends to joke with each other, and that her other friends never joke around with each other.

A. Explain to her that it is just joking. Friends tend to kid around and most people understand that but some people are just really sensitive about it. If she still thinks that it's wrong, make an effort to tone it down when she's around. Maybe try to stop teasing her, but don't change your behavior around your other friends.

What should you do when you make a joke and nobody laughs?
Q. Every time I make a joke I expect a few laughs and recently I told this girl a joke and it was very awkward when she didn't laugh. I thought it was pretty funny and my friend did too. If that ever happens again, how do I avoid the awkwardness?

A. When you say the pitch line and nobody laughs, just say, "This is the part where you laugh..." Usuallly that'll get at least a chuckle. And it won't be so awkward.

How long would the riots last if someone made a rude and tasteless joke about the obama girls?
Q. How long would the riots last if someone made a joke about obama's daughters being raped, made a joke about them having abortions or said anything about obama's girls other than, "they are so cute"? How many businesses would be burned after being looted? After the riots how long and loudly will the very same people who destroyed their own community beg for handouts?

A. They told us if Barack Obama were elected, the nation would come together. Souls would be fixed. Spirits would be healed. Public discourse would be elevated. Welcome to civility and tolerance in the Age of Obama. Pouting, sulking and whining are three of the most annoying ways that liberals communicate their displeasure, anger or frustration with a situation. This behavior is not just limited to young liberals, either adult liberals do it because they haven t always learned the skills to express their frustration in an appropriate way. Simply put: it works for them. When liberals walk around in a huff in order to get their way, that means someone is still reacting to it. But know this: if you start blaming, accusing or trying to reason… [cont.]

Comedy has a popular meaning (stand-up, along with any discourse generally intended to amuse), which differs from its academic definition, namely the comic theatre, whose Western origins are found in Ancient Greece. The theatrical genre can be simply described as a dramatic performance pitting two societies against each other in an amusing agon or conflict. Comedy contains variations on the elements of surprise, incongruity, conflict, repetitiveness, and the effect of opposite expectations, and there are many recognized genres.

  • What we eventually run up against are the forces of humourlessness, and let me assure you that the humourless as a bunch don't just not know what's funny, they don't know what's serious. They have no common sense, either, and shouldn't be trusted with anything.
