The pope (from Latin: "papa" or "father" from Greek πάππας, pappas) is the Bishop of Rome and as such, is leader of the worldwide Catholic Church (that is, both the Latin Rite and the Eastern Catholic Churches in full communion with the Roman Pontiff). The current office-holder is Pope Benedict XVI, who was elected in papal conclave on 19 April 2005.

The office of the pope is called the Papacy, and his ecclesiastical jurisdiction the "Holy See" (Sancta Sedes in Latin) or "Apostolic See" (the latter on the basis that both St. Peter and St. Paul were martyred at Rome). The pope is also head of state of Vatican City, a sovereign city-state entirely enclaved by Rome.

Early popes helped to spread Christianity and resolve doctrinal disputes. After the conversion of the rulers of the Roman Empire (the conversion of the populace was already advanced even before the Edict of Milan, 313), the Roman emperors became the popes' secular allies until, with the loss of the emperors' power in the west, Pope Stephen II was forced in the 8th century to appeal to the Franks for help, beginning a period of close interaction with the rulers of the west. For centuries, the forged Donation of Constantine also provided the basis for the papacy's claim of political supremacy over the entire former Western Roman Empire. In medieval times, popes played powerful roles in Western Europe, often struggling with monarchs for power over wide-ranging affairs of church and state, crowning emperors (Charlemagne was the first emperor crowned by a pope) and regulating disputes among secular rulers.

Gradually forced to give up secular power, popes now focus almost exclusively on spiritual matters. Over the centuries, popes' claims of spiritual authority have been ever more clearly expressed, culminating in the proclamation of the dogma of papal infallibility for rare occasions when the pope speaks ex cathedra (literally "from the chair (of Peter)") to issue a solemn definition of faith or morals. The first (after the proclamation) and so far the last such occasion was in 1950, with the definition of the dogma of the Assumption of Mary.

Did Pope Leo I copy the structure of the government of Rome into the Catholic Church?
Q. With the office of the Pope being the equivalent of the Emperor, the college of Cardinals as the Senate, etc.? I know that hw was a great admirer of the structure of the government of Rome. Can you please give me references upon which you base your opinion?

A. His main significance in the Catholic chuirch is as the Pope who "decreed" that the Pope was infallible. It is probable that he did use the structure of the Roman empire as a basis for the structure of the Church - after all he had lived all his life under that system and knew it much better than any other (my only hesitation is saying that he admired the system was that by the time of his reign as Pope the Roman Empire had begun its decline and was corrupt.)

What the heck is going on with the Pope and Muslims?
Q. The bombing of Catholic churches and shooting of Catholic religious figures is a little silly and ridiculous. The pope should not have to apologize. What's he going to say anyways, "Sorry for making comments on Muslim violence that created violence in the name of Allah"? In my humble opinion, every single organized religion should be outlawed. All it does is create problems in countries and within governments.

A. This isn't about religion. This is about a large group of people who are too thinned skin and who think violence is an appropriate reaction whenever someone says something you don't like. It's part of the culture, though. Listen to the leaders of the major Muslim nations. They always go completely overboard in their rhetoric. It's going to be a long long time before things get better. These people are still living with attitudes that most of the West moved past about 100 years ago.

Who was the Pope that invented the story that the Mother Mary went to heaven after she died?
Q. The Bible makes no reference to when or how she died, so where did this story come from? Is this just another example of how religious propaganda creates it's own history with no regard to the truth? Do people believe this story just because the Pope declared it to be true?

A. Catholics believe in the assumption of the body of the Blessed Virgin Mary into heaven after her death. John 19:26-27 states: When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple there whom he loved, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son." Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother." And from that hour the disciple (John) took her into his home. The minutes of the Ecumenical Council of Ephesus in 431 C.E. indicate that four or six years after the death and resurrection of Jesus, John and the Virgin Mary came together to Ephesus, and for a short time stayed in the building, a section of which is now under Church of the Virgin Mary today. Later John moved the Virgin Mary to a house he had prepared for her on Bulbul Dagi (Bulbul… [cont.]
