From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. A television situation comedy, often shortened to sitcom, is a genre of comedy that features recurring characters in a common environment such as a home or workplace, accompanied with jokes as part of the dialogue. A situation comedy may be recorded before a studio audience. Some also feature a laugh track. Such programs originated in radio. Today, sitcoms are found almost exclusively on television as one of its dominant narrative forms. CharacteristicsAs opposed to stand up comedy and sketch comedy, a situation comedy has a storyline and ongoing characters in, essentially, a comedic drama. The situation is usually that of a family, workplace, or a group of friends. Traditionally comedy sketches were presented within a variety show and mixed with musical performances, as in vaudeville. The emerging mass medium of radio allowed audiences to regularly return to programs, so programs could feature the same characters and situations each episode and expect audiences to be familiar with them. Sitcom humor is often character driven and by its nature running gags often evolve during a series. Often the status quo of the situation is maintained from episode to episode. An episode may feature a disruption to the usual situation and the character interactions, but this will usually be settled by the episode's end and the situation returned to how it was prior to the disruption. There are exceptions to this. Some shows feature story arcs across many episodes where the characters and situations change and evolve. From Wikipedia under the
GNU Free Documentation License Why are good British sitcoms always cancelled? Q. Take in my mind all the shows I will talk about are pretty recent considering my age. First there was SPaced, then BLack Books and then Green wing. Every show was extremely good and innovative and only lasted around 2 seasons each. WTF? THe only show I can currently count on is Peep SHow and I'm hoping that doesn't get axed. ALso, If you could recommend any other good British Sitcoms I would be very gratefull. Asked by Don Caballero - Mon Jul 6 14:33:58 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. If I could recommend you anything it would be 'Fawlty Towers'. The sitcom was made in the 1970s but it has become one of the greates British TV productions. It was made by John Cleese (of the Monthy Pythons) and his wife Connie Booth. They made only 12 episodes and even though I wish there were more, I guess it's better they wanted to do something really good (it's said they would spend months working on the script of one episode) rather than just do it for the sake of making money. I'm not sure why the other show you asked about were cancelled .. perhaps for the same reasons Answered by bramblette - Thu Jul 9 07:44:37 2009 Why do we no longer get classic sitcoms on TV anymore? Q. For people in the UK, have you noticed that no extremely funny and well-acted sitcoms such as One foot in the grave, Only fools and horses and Fawlty Towers are produced anymore... do you think this is anything to do with the advent of reality of TV or other factors? Asked by Kevinasp - Sun Nov 9 15:32:15 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. I imagined it's the same in the uk as in the usa- MONEY - Reality/Competition shows are Cheaper to make ( and if it's on a commerical network will make a Profit for the company/network) Actors/Writers of Quality cost money And I have noticed that the whole TV Ratings thing is getting more attention in the UK (in the usa Ratings are Everything) Answered by LadyMerton - Sun Nov 9 16:41:56 2008 Where can I watch french sitcoms with english subtitles online to learn french?
